My third or so run through with a Troll Death Knight was proving to be quite successful but as ever hubris was my downfall. Not being fully aware of how much damage a Large Slime Creature can deal and not wanting to loose my phantasmal warrior I thought a fire wand and some melee would do the job. Sadly I was mistaken. But it was an interesting game, the first where I had taken a build which used allies further than the first few dungeons.

I had taken down an orc warrior earlier but that was while berzerking, with this one I was too hungry to berzerk (could’ve used Okawaru’s Heroism though) and not concentrating enough such that I didn’t even bother to quaff a heal wounds even though I had already seen a LOW HITPOINT WARNING on a build not known for its generous amounts of HP. Neither was I expecting 18 damage but that’s hardly an excuse. YASD.
Once more unfamiliarity is my demise. I poked my head into Swamp:1 for the first time, was teleported about by Jozef, ended up near a hydra and some of its buddies then was swiftly undone. I could’ve at least entered with invisibility invoked or employed speed once I’d gotten into a tight spot.
Approaching a very solid midgame I thought I would adventure into a level previously unvisited in my Crawl experience - A Spiders Nest. As has often been the case death comes in unknown foes - on this occasion it was a pair of emperor scorpions and me without rPois or a hallway to duck into. Of course I should’ve run, teleported or at least used Heroism but I didn’t. What a fool.
An uneventful MDFi descent up to that point (apart from running from Jessica) when I thought I might try my luck against an ogre wielding a giant club. Foolishly I thought I might come out of it alive having “severely wounded” the ogre without any damage, two turns later I was dead. Lesson learnt hopefully.
Figured a spore would only cause damage since confusion wasn’t an issue. Then along comes Prince Ribbit. It was looking to be quite a promising game too with the switch to Okawaru and a 0,+7 ring of slaying.
A character for the 16th Reddit weekly run. This time I lost patience/focus with an Ogre and tried to attack it directly. Luck was almost on my side, “The ogre is almost dead”, but not. Xom gave me the odd surprise but was mostly benign up to this point.
Thought I could make the better of an iguana going toe-to-toe. As per usual berserking would have solved that particular problem. A fairly unremarkable descent up to that point otherwise.
